This is a project I created during my semester abroad at the University of Salford, Manchester, UK in the course Fundamentals of Motion and Interactivity. The briefing was to do a remix of existing open sourced art work. This can be texts, films and audio material.
I chose the Staten Island Ferry Disaster Story. A story invented by the artist Joe Reginella: In 1963 a horrible incident took place only a short distance from Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan. A giant octopus pulled the whole ferry under water. None of the 400 passengers survived.
The animation is based on authentic black and white photographies of the 1960s in New York City. I used parallax and 3D effects to bring the old stills to life.
